Rolling out of Small Business Insurance over various Digital Channels

Howden Insurance Brokers with Sanlam came up with a micro insurance product to cover small businesses. The insurance was facilitating to cover Material Damage, Burglary, Rent, Money Loss & Funeral expenses in the case of owner death for the business.

Problem & Challenges

Being a Micro Insurance Product, the premium was too low to cover the cost of operations. Therefore technology was only the medium to distribute this product.

Another challenge was the technology used should be friendlier for the business owners to use as most of them are not technology savvy.

The challenge was to distribute this product over cost effective manner with minimum use of human resources.

Solution

The technology that was used to sell this insurance was USSD channel, which not only enabled simplified use for the business owners but also wider reach.

Another solution that was provided was to embed this product into existing mobile apps such as eCommerce Mobile & Banking Mobile App which had an existing customer base. The Smart Policy Product API was consumed by these Apps to facilitate the buying of insurance.

Both USSD & Mobile App were integrated with Mobile Money Channel’s for premium payment.

Result and Benefits

The above mentioned solution provided the customer wider reach for customer acquisition.

USSD provided the reach to the remote areas of the country where internet was not prevalent. Besides the use of USSD technology simplified the buying process.

Embedding the product over existing mobile apps, also provided access to the existing customer base and educating businesses to buy such insurance product.

The process of buying insurance over USSD & Mobile App eliminated the manual paper work of business insurance and encourage instant buying of policies.

Rolling out Combined Product of Accident and Life Insurance Policy

Tan Management Insurance Brokers with Sanlam Insurance Company came up with a micro insurance product called “Bima ya Ajali na Maisha” – Accident and life Insurance. This product is very unique as the product was channelized via Fuel Vendors to reach the targeted audience. The aim was to insure the individual who spends a minimum of TSH 10,000 for fuel with an Accident and Life cover for 7 days who are paying digitally.

Problem & Challenges

The number of individuals filling fuel every day is more than thousands and it would not be possible insuring each one via the traditionally method of acquiring their information and then sending out the policy.

Solution

The way forward was to digitalize this product hence it was agreed that in order to be insured, the client pays the fuel amount due digitally.

Once the payment is made digitally the APIs communicate with Smart Policy to automate issuance of an accident and life cover for the individual. There after he will receive and automated message with the covering details of his policy in real time.

Result and Benefits

It brings about a value added service for filling something as simple as fuel. Moreover educates the customer base the significance of insurance. Once the customer is intrigued with the idea it becomes easy to reach out to the customer for more insurance services.

Furthermore the policy is sent out as an SMS hence it’s been tailored to be simple to understand to the receiving individual. It also adds as a convenience to the client as the policy is accessible in his mobile phone.

Rolling out Travel Insurance

Tan Management Insurance Brokers with Jubliee Life Insurance Company introduced a travel product known as “Safari Njema.” This product was to serve individuals travelling within Tanzania only via car, bus, flight or boat.

Problem & Challenges

The technology used, needs to be user friendly as this products major target audience are not fully equipped with technology nor the idea of insurance in general.

Solution

To reach out the maximum people this product was enabled on USSD platforms. In order to buy the Safari Njema policy one will need to go their nearest Wakala and buy the Safari Njema voucher. The voucher provides a quick guideline on whats covered and how to go about enabling this product via your mobile networks USSD platform. Once the person has purchased the voucher he will enter the voucher number on to the USSD channel of his mobile network and it will then be communicated to Smart Policy system to identify the premium amount it was purchased for and hence insuring the client.

Result and Benefits

Eradicates the idea of individuals buying travel policies only while travelling internationally.

The process of buying over USSD platform and premium value allows accessibility of the product to low income house holds
